Amba or anba (Arabic: عنبة, but also mis-spelled عمبة, أمبة, همبة, Hebrew: עמבה) is a tangy mango pickle condiment of Iraqi origin. It is typically made of pickled green mangoes, vinegar, salt, turmeric, chili and fenugreek. It is somewhat similar to savoury mango chutneys.

What is amba sauce used for?
Typically made from green mangoes, vinegar, and varying spices, amba is a condiment used on sabich, a sandwich filled with fried eggplant, hard-boiled eggs, and a thin tahini sauce. It’s also a popular condiment for falafel, shawarma, and other street foods.
Where can I find amba?
The amba sauce has a gorgeous yellow color, just like a really ripe mango. You can find it in the refrigerated section -at my TJ’s it was near the hummus-for only $3.29 for 14 ounces.
Is amba healthy?
As good as the Mediterranean diet is, its health benefits can be improved even further by adding amba. There is a simple reason for this: Amba is spicy. Consuming spicy foods, they found, increases the sense that one’s appetite is satiated.
What is Apple amba?
Amba is made traditionally with mangoes, but Philadelphia chef and author of Israeli Soul, Michael Solomonov, used apples instead for delicious results. Michael uses this as a topping on his Potato-Leek Latkes along with Herbed Labneh and Garlic-Feta Dip.
Is amba Indian?
The word amba means mango in Indian. It is believed that it was first made in the 19th century by the Sassoon family in Bombay, although they were Iraqi Jews from Baghdad, so it can be said that amba is technically Indian in origin, but over time it became a staple in Iraq, Pakistan, Israel, and Saudi Arabia.

Can you freeze Amba?
You can also freeze it, but it will lose some of its garlicky flavor. Directions: Wash the mangoes well and cut them up (including the peel) into slices the size of your pinky finger. Coat with the 1 ¼ tablespoons of salt, and place the slices into a large jar.
Is turmeric bad for your kidneys?
Curcumin, which is the main bioactive component in turmeric, is a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. However, while turmeric and curcumin are generally safe to consume, too much of a good thing can be dangerous. One of the risks is that large doses can be bad for your kidneys.
Who should not take tumeric?
People who should not take turmeric include those with gallbladder problems, bleeding disorders, diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), infertility, iron deficiency, liver disease, hormone-sensitive conditions and arrhythmia. Pregnant women and those who are going to undergo surgery should not use turmeric.

Turmeric contains more than 300 naturally occurring components including beta-carotene, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), calcium, flavonoids, fiber, iron, niacin, potassium, zinc and other nutrients.
